The Oceania Judo Union proudly congratulates Peter Herrmann on receiving the 10th Dan, the highest possible rank in judo, awarded by the International Judo Federation (IJF).
Peter Herrmann becomes the first Australian and one of only 23 individuals globally to have ever received this honour from the IJF or the Kodokan. He now joins an elite and historic group of judoka whose contributions to the sport span decades of technical mastery, teaching, leadership, and service.
A Lifetime of Dedication
Peter Herrmann’s judo journey began in Germany and flourished across Europe and Oceania. As a competitor, he earned medals at both the World and European Championships, before dedicating his later career to coaching and developing judo in Australia and the wider Oceania region.
His promotion to 10th Dan recognises not just his skill on the tatami, but also his lasting contributions as a coach, mentor, and advocate for the sport. Herrmann’s impact can be seen in the many champions he has developed and the institutions he has helped strengthen across the judo community.
"One of the highest grades in Judo has a new recipient—with only 23 in the world awarded to one of our own. Many words and celebrations will be forthcoming over the coming weeks."
