The Oceania Judo Union (OJU) held its Congress on 31 October 2025, bringing together representatives from across the region to reflect on recent achievements, discuss future priorities, and elect the leadership team who will guide Oceania Judo into its next four-year cycle.
In a strong display of unity and confidence, Kate Corkery (Australia) was re-elected as President of the OJU, continuing her leadership into a second term. Joining her, Kiki Velloza (New Zealand) and Trindade de Abreu Abedias (New Caledonia) were both reinstated unopposed as 2nd Vice President and Sports Director, respectively — reaffirming the Congress’s trust in the current Executive’s collaborative and forward-focused approach.
Building Peace Through Judo
Held in conjunction with World Judo Day 2025, themed “Peace”, the Congress reflected deeply on the power of Judo to build understanding and connection across diverse nations and communities.
President Corkery said:
“Peace is not simply the absence of conflict — it is the daily choice to act with respect, courage and shared purpose. Through Judo, we create peace one lesson, one handshake, and one friendship at a time. Oceania has shown the world that unity can be our strength and peace our legacy.”
She emphasised that the next four years will focus on unity, growth, and inclusion, reinforcing the OJU’s commitment to empowering every member nation — from the smallest island federation to the largest national association.
Continuity and Collaboration
The Congress highlighted key milestones achieved during the 2023–2025 term, including:
- The reclaiming of the Continental Championships.
- Expanded development programs for athletes, referees, and coaches.
- Strengthened partnerships with the International Judo Federation (IJF) and the broader international community.
- Renewed focus on gender equity, athlete wellbeing, and integrity in governance.
The re-election of the Executive team ensures continuity and stability as the OJU looks toward the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games, positioning Oceania to play a vital role in the global Judo movement.
A Vision for 2025–2029
President Corkery reaffirmed her commitment to implementing the OJU Vision 2025–2029, focused on:
- Deepening collaboration across member federations.
- Expanding opportunities for women and youth.
- Strengthening education and coaching pathways.
- Ensuring financial and governance transparency.
“The OJU is more than an organisation — it’s a family of nations connected by respect and driven by shared purpose,” said Corkery. “Together, we will continue to grow Judo in Oceania, guided by peace, inclusion, and integrity.”
The Congress closed with a renewed sense of optimism and purpose, as delegates reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing Judo across the Pacific. With the 2026–2029 period set to bring further growth and international engagement, the OJU stands united behind its leadership and ready to continue shaping a legacy of peace, inclusion, and excellence.
